Pistons are the reciprocating parts in the engine cylinder block.
The basic structure of the piston can be divided into top, head and skirt. The top of the piston is the main part of the combustion chamber, and its shape is related to the selected combustion chamber form.
Gasoline engines mostly use flat-top pistons, which have the advantage of small heat absorption area. There are often various pits on the top of diesel engine pistons, and their specific shape, location and size must be adapted to the requirements of diesel engine mixture formation and combustion.
The whole piston can be divided into three parts: piston crown, piston head and piston skirt.
1, The main function of the piston is to withstand the combustion pressure in the cylinder and transmit this force to the crankshaft through the piston pin and connecting rod. In addition, the piston forms a combustion chamber with the cylinder head and cylinder wall.
2, The piston crown is an integral part of the combustion chamber, so it is often made into different shapes. At most, the gasoline engine piston adopts a flat top or a concave top to make the combustion chamber compact in structure, small in heat dissipation area and simple in manufacturing process. Convex pistons are often used in two-stroke gasoline engines. The piston crown of a diesel engine is often made into various pits.
3, The piston head is the part above the piston pin seat. The piston head is equipped with a piston ring to prevent high temperature and high pressure gas from entering the crankcase and at the same time preventing oil from entering the combustion chamber; most of the heat absorbed by the top of the piston also passes through the piston head The part is passed to the cylinder, and then passed away through the cooling medium.
4, The piston head is machined with several ring grooves for installing piston rings. The number of piston rings depends on the sealing requirements, and it is related to the engine speed and cylinder pressure. High-speed engines have fewer rings than low-speed engines, and gasoline engines have fewer rings than diesel engines. Generally, gasoline engines use two gas rings and one oil ring; diesel engines use three gas rings and one oil ring; low-speed diesel engines use 3 to 4 gas rings. In order to reduce friction loss, the height of the ring belt should be reduced as much as possible, and the number of rings should be reduced under the condition of ensuring sealing.
